Only 21 pictures. Three dimensions. One woman. One year in Bakersfield. The most valuable View-Master reel ever made.
Some highlights:
In Laundry Night, Carol stands in a dim utility room beside a washing machine that appears to be shaking itself loose from the floor. In 3D, the socks seem to float toward you like evidence.
In Visiting Gerry in Hospital, Carol sits beside a man wrapped in bandages, holding a vending machine sandwich and staring past him like she knows exactly how he ended up there.
Then comes Smoke & Eggs. Carol, seated at breakfast, cigarette raised like a tiny courtroom objection, gazes directly into the lens. Eggs sit untouched. The room feels tense like maybe Pete had again used the good pan.
By Fight with Pete, the reel becomes unstable. The left-eye image shows Pete entering the room. The right-eye image shows Pete already leaving it. When viewed with enough light, you can see Pete's ghost in the room.
But nothing compares to These Goddamned Cats.
You just have to see it, to believe it.
The final scenes were taken shortly before she went to jail for burning down the Bakersfield police headquarter
